Welcome to historic Lakewood Cemetery in Cooperstown, New York. The cemetery was organized in 1856, and for nearly 175 years, we have sought to provide, maintain, and preserve a suitable place for the burial of the dead. There are now over 4,800 people buried or memorialized here.
Lakewood Cemetery is located at 182 County Highway 31, just outside the village of Cooperstown, on the east side of Otsego Lake.
The cemetery has two sections. The original or “east” section is the largest, and is accessible through two entrances. The main entrance is through a gateway that is located alongside a white caretaker's cottage. The second entrance is through a gateway located north of the main entrance.
The newer “west” section is directly across the road from the east section. It borders Otsego Lake.
There are no parking lots. Please park where you can without disturbing gravesites and please be considerate of others who may need to share the cemetery roadways.
The cemetery is open during daylight hours.
It is open all year but may not be accessible during winter due to weather. Most of the cemetery roadways are not plowed.
